In the blame game, there are some forbidden targets and some easy targets. Rich kids are easy targets and that must be why Dylan Matthews at the Washington Post decided to blame them for the rising college costs. The argument goes like this: the colleges stick it to the rich kids by shifting the costs onto their backs with the financial “aid” system. The rich kids only care about country club amenities and so the colleges need to build more of them to attract more of the rich kids who will then fund the poor kids. Alas the colleges don’t have money for the poor kids because they spent it all on attracting the rich kids and so they need to boost tuition some more which makes it all worse.
So is the solution to make the poor kids pick up the tab for everyone? Sigh.
