Obama can’t bring himself to do anything about the college industrial complex

Could a man without strong family capital make it to the White House without a fancy degree from Harvard? I doubt it. Obama knows he owes everything to the myth-creating power of the college industrial complex and that’s why I think it will be impossible for him to actually do something. Oh, he’s probably heard the plaints enough now to realize that colleges are squeezing their students and taking advantage of their desire to pay any amount of money to be middle class. He probably understands on some intellectual level that giving more money to the schools just encourages them to raise the price. But when it comes down to deciding, he’ll choose the path that puts the most money in the pockets of the schools.

And so that’s why I don’t expect much from the score card discussed at the State of the Union. (See reporting from Kelly Field at the Chronicle of Higher Edumacation.) How do you even measure “bang for the buck”?

I am extraordinarily skeptical of this proposition. I do not think he has any understanding of economic concepts at all.
