Students take to the barricades

Oh, I had a depressing thought about the recent round of student protests. Let’s imagine that by some miracle, the government decided that college should be free and taxes would pay for it. “Party time” shouts the students. But when they graduate and start paying taxes, they’ll be hit by bills that will be just as large as their student loans. Why? Because everyone will be going to college. If one person ends up with $n,000 of student loans, then m people should end up running up a bill of $mn,000. Then when we spread that out and tax m people, we get stuck with $n,000 per person– assuming the bureaucracy doesn’t add anything in the process.

So the only choice is making do with fewer latte bars, fancy gyms, and flat screen tvs in the dorms.Oh, and the profs have to teach more too.
