Who hasn’t day dreamed about getting up in front of fellow 11th graders and announcing that if elected, senior year will be canceled and everyone will graduate a year early? That’s one guaranteed way to win a huge majority and beat the pants over the unimaginative who may only promise to try and get seltzer water at the cafeteria.
Walter Kirn, a great writer who skipped 12th grade himself, pretty much agrees with the idea first suggested by Utah educators. That’s all cool.
But I’m just suggesting that my scam-alert, Spidey-sense is tingling. If this comes to pass– and what deficit-bound school system won’t jump at a chance to help kids save what Kirn calls “precious time”– then I see community colleges and other four year institutions start selling replacement packages. You graduate earlier from high school, but the community college will only take you if you pay several thousand dollars for a remedial education package. The high schools save money and the colleges make more money. Everyone wins! Well, except the students.
