You’re thinking that you can’t just hire a professor because you would have to pay for health insurance and give them an office. Wrong! Most adjuncts don’t get either.
Sara Hebel at the Chronicle of Higher Edumacation writes of a new project to collect data about the pay and expectations for adjunct professors. As you might expect, the news is dismal. In many cases, students would be better off skipping college and hiring the professors directly. Some state schools charge more for one course than they pay the professors. Ugh.
