I must control my urge to deploy sarcasm. I must. But what’s a blogger like me to do when confronted by the news that Occidental college, once the cradle of our President, is pushing a course devoted to studying stupidity in all of its different manifestations.
“With the application of critical and postmodernist theory – most notably in the extraordinary work of Avital Ronell – we are in a position to identify stupidity in its more varied, dynamic and pervasive forms,” the Professor, Glenn A. Elmer Griffin, told the Times of London.
Yup. Long ago, the universities defended wisdom against the dark ages. Now, they professors are so filled with ennui that they sit around and ponder the dynamic and pervasive forms of stupidity. A name like “Avital” sounds French. Citing someone French is worth some brownie points at tenure review time, right? But I must control my urge to deploy sarcasm to defend wisdom against the dark ages. Certainly, the smart people can try to learn how to win friends and influence people. Their personalities are so clouded by Aspergers disease that they should try. Maybe this is the right way to motivate them with citations from French people. My only complaint is some parent is going to have to fund this discourse in stupidity. Can’t we save this craziness for continuing education? Can’t we force the students to pay for it out of their own pocket? That would ensure that society doesn’t over consume such vapid chatter.
